Treatments for Binge Eating
Treatment can be varied majorly when dealing with patients that struggle with binge eating disorder. Most to all treatment deals with varying types of therapy. There are four main ways to help fix the problem of binge eating:
Since binge eating disorder can not necessarily be cured research is still trying to attempting to determine which method or combination of methods is the most effective in controlling binge eating disorder. Treatment may take several months or longer until the best of results are seen (Binge Eating Disorder Help 2015).
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This includes the method in which the patient is taught techniques to monitor and change their eating habits, as well as to change the way they respond to difficult and stressful situations. For example the patient could include beginning a diet, or ways to change the unhealthy eating habits which may lead to binges (Understanding BED 2014).
- Interpersonal psychotherapy: Method in which the client is taught to examine their relationships with friends and family and to make changes in problem areas. It helps individuals with eating disorders to understand the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that trigger these disorders. This is meant to examine and find the source of trouble within the individual and how they can mend relationships that are causing trouble. This will help to internally fix the problems that begin within the individual which may trigger binges to start (Goldberg, 2014).
- Medications: Antidepressants may be helpful for some individuals whose main source of binges are due to being stuck in a depressing state of mind. Although antidepressants may not solve the physical problems of body appearances within patients that binge, it will help prevent the individuals mindset to be preoccupied and depressed.
- Good medical/ health care: It is very important for people with binge eating disorder to rebuild good medical care, this includes nutritional management and counseling along with healthy ways of exercise living. This will help to recreate a normal eating habit while also keeping the body much healthier and better functioning.
